The heart isn’t actually a muscle, but a muscular organ. The heart is the center of the circulatory system and is one of the structures of the mediastinum. It has a protective sac called the pericardium and four chambers. Its wall has three layers, called endocardium, myocardium and epicardium. The heart is critical to everything that goes on in your body and is especially critical to your health.

What It Does – Pumps blood throughout your body.

Electrical signals contract the walls of the heart, which pumps blood throughout the body.

Systematic Circulation: In systematic circulation, oxygenated blood leaves the heart and is carried to the body. Deoxygenated blood then returns to the heart.

Pulmonary Circulation: In pulmonary circulation, deoxygenated blood leaves the heart and is carried to the lungs. Oxygenated blood then returns to the heart.

Exercise – Check out my next post and I’ll show you how to do a great workout for your heart.
